Ross Poldark, returns from the American wars to his home in 18th century Cornwall, only to find that his fiancée, Elizabeth Chynoweth, having believed him dead, is about to marry his cousin, Francis. Determined to restore his own fortunes, he reopens one of the family's tin mines, and tries to forget his beloved Elizabeth.
