I have watched many war films, especially set in world war 2. I always think how similar the stories are, because we know what happens. This film however, I loved.
It was a cut above the rest and I would love for it to be shown on a cinema screen world wide. It was intense, it was dramatic, I was holding my breath at some points. It was well casted, the actors did a remarkable job. Really well played and they helped to bring the intense emotion too. I hated Georg, so really well done with him, I always think if you can hate a bad guy that is incredible acting, as we are supposed to.
I loved the scenic wide shots, where the viewers saw the mountains, I loved that setting. Overall, I will hope to see it at cinema screenings in the future.

Endlich mal ein Film, der zwar historische Ereignisse thematisiert, aber die Charaktere, deren Emotionen, Mimik, Dilemmata, Monologe, Gespräche in den Vordergrund stellt. Mitreißend, tolle Darsteller und Bilder. Absolut zu empfehlen, einfach wow!
Ich war selten so gefesselt von einem Film. Von Anfang an versprüht er seine Einzigartigkeit und nimmt einen mit in eine Welt voller Emotionen.
Es ist die Kommunikation zwischen den Schauspielern, die auf verschiedenen Ebenen stattfindet. Keine ewigen Dialoge, sondern eher subtil durch Gestik und Mimik - und wenigen Worten. Ja, "wiedermal ein Film, der im 2. Weltkrieg spielt", doch hier steht die Angst, Ablehnung und Anziehung der Protagonisten im Vordergrund. Die Jüdin und der NS-Soldat: ist Vergebung möglich? Kann man Reue akzeptieren? Der Film zeigt Menschlichkeit und menschliches Verhalten, mit all seinen Facetten.
Die Kombination zwischen beeindruckenden Nah-, und stimmungsvollen Drohnenaufnahmen in Verbindung mit stimmiger und reduzierter Musik sind sehr besonders und absolut sehenswert. Einfach: ein sehr besonderes und fesselndes Filmerlebnis - Kompliment an das gesamte Team!

Endlich mal ein Film, der einen spüren lässt, wie zwei Menschen die Gräuel des 2. Weltkrieges erfahren haben.
Es ist definitiv kein Mainstream, definitiv kein schöner Film - aber das darf er auch 80 Jahre nach dem Kriegsende nicht sein.

The Deserter is a captivating exploration of the toll war takes on both the actors of violence and the victims of it, told primarily through Jewish refugee Hana (Anna Kaminski) and SS deserter Anton (Sebastian Fischer) as the two develop a relationship of dependency through their circumstantial happenstance.
The closeup framing of Anton as he regales the other characters with both fictitious and very real, gruesome stories of Nazi war crimes is gripping, generating a deep feeling and understanding of the embedded trauma within his character over the acts he has bared witness to and committed.
Anton and Hanna's interactions are a joy to watch as the two's bond deepens throughout the feature, only added to by Charlotte (Lana-Mae Lopicic) who manages to stand out as a breath of positivity and optimism. 'The Deserter' is incredibly well-paced in its build to the climax, with the use of Anton's flashbacks to develop the lurking evil of character Georg
(Sandro Kirtzel), which culminates with a detestable villain, even amongst the most prolific of on-screen Nazi characters despite his short screen time. The film's utilisation of colour is a joy to behold as bright, warm colours are used throughout
the core of the film leaving images of the characters pictured against the Germanic landscape embedded after the credits have rolled. Anton's flashbacks and contemporary war struggles in the opening segments are doused in contrasting
cold light, allowing the artistic integrity of the film to act as an accompaniment of emotive storytelling alongside the performance of the cast.

Tolle Kameraaufnahmen, spannende Dialoge und hervorragende Leistung der Schauspieler/innen! Besonders gut haben mir die längeren, dramatischen Szenen, zwischen den beiden Protagonisten gefallen, die durch das grandiose Drehbuch zustande kamen.
Ein absolutes Muss für jeden Independent-Film Liebhaber. Christoph Baumanns erste Spielfilmregie ist ein wirklich berührendes Werk, dass einem unter die Haut geht. Sehr empfehlenswert!
