Nach einer Verurteilung wegen Diebstahls wird Mary Broad (Romola Garai) 1787 mit dem ersten Konvoi in die neu errichtete Sträflingskolonie New South Wales verschifft. Auf der langen Überfahrt gewinnt sie die Zuneigung des Offiziers Ralph Clarke (Jack Davenport).
