Bringt Disney die Muppets nun zurück oder nicht? Das steckt hinter dem Wirrwarr um die Kult-Puppen

Während mit „Muppets Now“ kürzlich eine neue Show rund um die titelgebenden Puppen angekündigt wurde, gab es keinerlei Neuigkeiten zur zuvor angekündigten Serie „Muppets Live Another Day“. Nun steht fest: Das Projekt ist tot.

Anfang 2019 sind Pläne für ein ganz besonderes Comeback der Muppets auf Disneys kommendem Streamingdienst Disney+ durchgesickert: „Muppets Live Another Day“ sollte nicht an die jüngsten Kino-Abenteuer von Kermit, Miss Piggy und Co. („Die Muppets“ und „Muppets Most Wanted“) oder die kurzlebige Mockumentary-Serie „The Muppets“ aus dem Jahr 2015, sondern direkt an den Film „Die Muppets erobern Manhattan“ von 1984 anknüpfen. So hätten wir in der neuen Serie gesehen, wie Kermit nach seiner Hochzeit mit Miss Piggy die Puppen-Truppe aufgelöst hätte, sich später aber wieder mit den anderen zusammenraufen muss, um den verschwundenen Rowlf zu suchen. Nun wurde das Format allerdings noch in der Entwicklungsphase eingestampft.

Kreative Differenzen

Offiziell wurde „Muppets Live Another Day“ von „Muppets“-Inhaber Disney zwar nie angekündigt, Quellen des gut vernetzten Branchenmagazins Variety konnten allerdings bestätigen, dass die Autoren Josh Gad, Adam Horowitz und Edward Kitsis zusammen mit den „Die Eiskönigin“-Songschreibern Kristen Anderson-Lopez und Robert Lopez für über ein Jahr an dem Projekt gewerkelt haben.

Das Schreiber-Trio, das zu Disney einen guten Draht hat (Gad spielte LeFou im „Schöne und das Biest“-Realfilm und lieh Schneemann Olaf in der Originalfassung von „Die Eiskönigin“ seine Stimme; die einstigen „Lost“-Autoren Horowitz und Kitsis waren für die Märchen-Serie „Once Upon A Time“ verantwortlich), hätte seiner „Muppets“-Serie den Rücken gekehrt, nachdem eine neue Führung bei den Muppets Studios diese angeblich in eine andere Richtung lenken wollte. Das wurde von Josh Gad inzwischen via Instagram größtenteils bestätigt. Er spricht dabei ebenfalls von „kreativen Differenzen“, findet trotz des Scheiterns ansonsten aber sehr versöhnliche Worte für die Verantwortlichen:

Misinformation is my least favorite kind of information so I thought I’d take a minute to clarify some news that broke today. After a little over a year and a half of working on a project called “Muppets Live Another Day,” @adamhorowitzla #eddykitsis and I have decided, with a heavy heart, to walk away. Some times creative differences are just that. The project, with original songs by Bobby Lopez and Kristen Lopez was to be directed by the great Jason Moore, (director of “Avenue Q” and “Pitch Perfect”). It was meant to be a limited event series that picked up a year after “Muppets Take Manhattan” and was essentially about what happens after you’ve reached the end of the rainbow. It was going to be Muppets by way of Stranger Things and feel like a movie spread over 6-8 episodes. Part of the joy for us, by placing the Muppets in the middle of the 1980’s, was to subvert and comment on our current love for all things nostalgia while at the same time allowing the characters to tell a story that would ultimately lead to and end in present day, revealing some secrets along the way. It has been one of the great joys of all of our lives to write words for these iconic characters. We wish this franchise all the best and thank our partners at Disney+ and ABC Studios for the opportunity to develop something so fun and outside the box. They have been nothing but supportive and terrific and we can’t wait to play again in other sandboxes. While it is sad, I have no doubt this franchise, under its new leadership will find new and wonderful stories to tell. My only hope is that one day you can all hear the BRILLIANT music by Bobby and @kristenlopez5681 wrote for Kermit and company. The music is next level good. In the meantime, Adam, Eddy and I are already cooking up new fun ideas that we cannot wait to share. Until then, long live “The Muppets.” They have given us joy for over 40 years and I have no doubt they will continue to bring us joy for the next 40 years.

"Muppets Now" statt "Muppets Live Another Day"

Obwohl „Muppets Live Another Day“ damit gestorben ist, wird man bei Disney+ nicht auf die Puppen verzichten. Erst kürzlich wurde auf der Disney-Messe D23 nämlich die neue Show „Muppets Now“ angekündigt (dass daneben keine Rede von „Muppets Live Another Day“ war, stimmte schon zu jenem Zeitpunkt etwas skeptisch). Bei „Muppets Now“ wird es sich um eine nicht-gescriptete Serie mit kurzen Episoden handeln, in der auch prominente Gaststars vorbeischauen werden. Wie das genau aussehen wird (womöglich eher wie der TV-Klassiker „Die Muppet Show“?), wollte man allerdings noch nicht verraten.

„Muppets Now“ erscheint irgendwann im Laufe des Jahres 2020 bei Disney+. Vielleicht gibt es den neuen Streamingdienst dann auch schon in Deutschland. Während er am 12. November 2019 in den USA an den Start gehen wird, wird eine hiesige Veröffentlichung voraussichtlich Anfang des nächsten Jahres folgen.
